#NYUBucketList : Alternative Halloween

Typically, the image of Halloween in NYC means the Village parade, the puppy costume parade, and a host of club-sponsored parties. Senior House is offering two uniquely NYC experiences you might not have done yet! Ask us and sign up at the RC.

1. Procession of Ghouls at St. John the Divine

Isn’t Halloween pagan? Why is this event in a church? Halloween isn’t just about costumes and trick-or-treating! Cultures, beliefs, and traditions around the world have given Halloween its complex meaning to different groups of people. The evening begins with a silent horror film accompanied by the Cathedral’s eerie organ, followed by a beautifully orchestrated parade of puppets as they process to “When the Saints Go Marching In”.

2. Rocky Horror Picture Show at Bow Tie Cinemas, Chelsea

Ever have the urge to throw toilet paper in a movie theater? Think about screaming obscenities in a crowded room? The Rocky Horror experience involves a cult film, some outdated terms and a celebration of a gender-fluid film from the 70s. You may have done Rocky Horror before, but they’re NOTHING compared to the Halloween showing in NYC. Let’s talk horror flicks, sexual culture in the 70s, and dated slang!

A loving couple, a few lost monsters and a sweet transvestite from transsexual Transylvania sing and dance through a campy, sloppy salute to horror movies and sexual liberation. Bring your sense of humor. And some toast.”

So excited for one of my favorite holidays. Hope to see you there!

During welcome week, Senior House went to watch Venus Williams play at the US Open.   She’s gone quite a long way, and today she still ranks as number 19 at the age of 34!  Watching her play with such endurance and focus, was great inspiration before the school year, because sometimes college and living in this city can feel like playing a long grueling but thrilling match.
